The “sit” command is one of the most basic commands and typically one of the first that puppies are taught. Interacting and training your dog not only teaches your pooch proper manners and obedience, but it helps to create and strengthen your bond.

To teach a “sit” command you have to take the dog through a process filled with patience, repetition and reward. Make training fun! English is a second language for dogs…they don’t understand the meaning of “sit,” we have to condition them to understand what that sound means to them. Ever see a person speaking really loud to somebody who doesn’t speak the same language? Or they keep repeating themselves? Don’t be that guy! Yelling at your dog to “SIT!” or saying it over and over again won’t work. Stay calm and make sure you are being clear in what you are asking your dog to do.

No matter what the command, make sure you have your dog’s attention and to stop before you lose their attention. Training sessions should be short, especially for puppies. The goal with training is to make learning enjoyable for them…leave them wanting more. And remember, stay calm…I know it’s exciting when a dog “gets” a command, but jumping up and down when Fido sits isn’t what you want to to. Make sure you mark the behavior immediately with a “YES!” and a treat. Every time they repeat the behavior you are seeking, reward them with a treat.

Be sure to end your training sessions with a success. You want your dog to end on a high note and feel good about the training.

Most importantly BE PATIENT with yourself and your dog, and have fun!
